Their conviction of at least fifteen years imprisonment was not based on evidence but on racist profiling.</li>\n<li>Better conditions of detention, respecting their collective rights as Indigenous people, including the implementation of communal modules in prisons. Graffiti, murals, and civil resistance roadblocks appear across\u00a0<em>wallmapu</em>.</p>\n<p><em>December 13, 2023:</em>\u00a0Five more prisoners held separately in Temuco prison join the strike: Bastian Llaitul, Axel Campos, Roberto Garling, Jos\u00e9 Lienqueo, Oscar Ca\u00f1upan. They further demand forest companies and military out of\u00a0<em>wallmapu,\u00a0</em>and an end to state persecution of the Mapuche resistance to land grabbing.</p>\n<p>The court in Lautaro hears a motion to improve conditions of four PPM in pretrial detention: Pelentaro Llaitul, Luis Menares, J.C. Mardones, and Jorge Caniupil. The court refuses to lift the punitive measures.</p>\n<p><em>December 19, 2023</em>: The forestry company Minimco attempts entry into the Santa Ana farm in Coi-Coi, which has been retaken by the Indigenous community with CAM\u2019s support. They are repelled.</p>\n<p><em>December 26, 2023</em>: Government spokesperson Senator Camila Vallejo rejects a proposal by the Human Rights Institute to set up talks with the CAM.<a href=\"https://mronline.org/2024/02/06/mapuche-hunger-strike-reaches-crisis-point-political-prisoners-fight-for-madre-tierra/#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\"><sup>2</sup></a></p>\n<p><em>January 3, 2024:</em>\u00a0A protest by the Families of the Political Prisoners on the highway is brutally attacked by armored police with water cannons.</p>\n<p><em>January 11, 2024:\u00a0</em>The Concepci\u00f3n Court of Appeal denies the appeal for annulment of the convictions of Nicol\u00e1s Alcam\u00e1n, Ernesto Llaitul, Esteban Henr\u00edquez, and Ricardo Reinao. They refer the case back to the Los \u00c1ngeles court.</p>\n<p><em>January 13, 2024:</em>\u00a0The Los \u00c1ngeles court states that it is not possible to hear the appeal as the relevant judges are on holiday.</p>\n<p>Minister Monsalvo assures that the government has transferred extra funds 32 million dollars to both police forces (<em>gendarmer\u00eda\u00a0</em>and\u00a0<em>caribineros</em>).</p>\n<p>The National Institute of Human Rights arranges for a team from the Medical Association to assess. They report that Esteban \u201crequires urgent and comprehensive medical attention.\u201d He is in urgent need of hospitalization. \u201cIf he does not receive this assistance, there is a high probability that he will suffer a serious decompensation, deterioration of multiple organs and multi-organ failure, which could lead to his death.\u201d</p>\n<p>Esteban is transferred to Concepci\u00f3n regional hospital due to his acute state of health.</p>\n<p><em>January 16, 2024:\u00a0</em>The gendarmerie return Esteban to Bio-b\u00edo prison, ignoring the doctors\u2019 concerns.</p>\n<p>Families of the PPM take direct action in the Presidential Office in Bio-b\u00edo. Their banners read \u201c65 days on Hunger Strike\u201d and \u201cDefense of the Land Is not Terrorism or a Crime. Free the CAM Political Prisoners!\u201d</p>\n<p><em>January 17, 2024</em>: Two doctors were allowed in Temuco prison to evaluate the condition of the PPM there. They report that the five prisoners have each lost nine to fourteen kilograms since their hunger strike commenced thirty-seven days previously. They reported headaches, fatigue, dizziness, and abdominal pains.</p>\n<p>Federico Aguirre Madrid, of the Araucan\u00eda Institute of Human Rights, calls on the government to respect the prisoners\u2019 rights as Mapuche people.<a href=\"https://mronline.org/2024/02/06/mapuche-hunger-strike-reaches-crisis-point-political-prisoners-fight-for-madre-tierra/#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\"><sup>3</sup></a></p>\n<p><em>January 22, 2024:</em>\u00a0Application to the Appeal Court in Concepci\u00f3n to hear the appeal against conviction of Esteban, Nicol\u00e1s, Ernesto, and Ricardo.
