I thought that was the world. </em></span></span></p>\n<p><span><span><em>I wasn\u2019t in heaven, this was the earth. </em></span></span></p>\n<p><span><span>She studied nursing at Harlem Hospital, </span></span></p>\n<p><span><span>dared protest northern-style Jim Crow, </span></span></p>\n<p><span><span>once turning over a fully set \u201cwhite table.\u201d </span></span></p>\n<p><span><span>When Ohio River flooded, she offered to </span></span></p>\n<p><span><span>help the Red Cross. They replied the color </span></span></p>\n<p><span><span>of her skin was more trouble than she was worth.</span></span></p>\n<p><span><span>Why not Spain? a friend suggested. So Salaria </span></span></p>\n<p><span><span>enlisted. What? someone asked, Spain, alone? </span></span></p>\n<p><span><span><em>I wasn\u2019t born twins, </em>she said. <em>I have to go alone.</em></span></span></p>\n<p><span><span><em>Those were busy days.
